Remodeler using AI connected to JobTread for estimating and business insights

Remodelers are done debating whether to use AI. The more interesting question now is how deep it goes inside the business.

Recently, JobTread surveyed its customer base of contractors who connected AI directly to their business software. That’s agentic AI, meaning it can pull job data and make changes on its own, without anyone copying and pasting in between. Remodelers made up the largest group at nearly 46% of respondents, followed by home builders at just over 17%.

Key Findings from the Initial JobTread AI Survey

  • 29% of remodelers are AI power users, compared with 25% of all respondents.
  • Claude is the most-used AI tool at 91%, and 66% of contractors use more than one AI tool.
  • Estimating is the top use of AI at 50%, followed by business performance insights at 46%.
  • Nearly 77% expect AI to help them take on more work without adding headcount.
  • Over 53% say AI is a normal part of how their team works or is built into how the company operates.

How Do Remodelers Compare to Other Contractors in AI Proficiency?

Remodelers are slightly ahead with 29% qualifying as AI power users, compared with 25% of all respondents. AI proficiency was scored on two things: how often respondents use AI with their business data and what they use it for. Higher-level work like estimating and scheduling combined with greater frequency earned a higher score.

GroupPower UsersModerate UsersLight Users
Remodelers29%36%34%
All respondents25%37%38%

The gap is small, and it holds at both ends. Remodelers have more power users and fewer light users than the survey as a whole.

Who Are the Most Advanced AI Users in Construction?

The most advanced AI users in construction don’t share a single profile. You might expect them to cluster by company size or owner age, but they don’t. Power users were spread evenly across age and company type. The same held true for business size, team size, and time on JobTread.

That’s good news for remodelers who feel behind. Anyone can be a power user.

Which AI Tools Do Contractors and Remodelers Use Most?

Claude is the most popular AI tool among contractors in the JobTread AI Survey, used by 91% of respondents. ChatGPT came in second at 57%, followed by Gemini at 25% and Grok at 4%. Another 6% use something else.

Two-thirds (66%) of surveyed contractors use more than one AI tool, while 34% stick with one.

What Tasks Are Contractors Using AI to Handle in Their Business?

Estimating is the most common way contractors use AI, according to the JobTread AI Survey. Half of respondents use AI for estimating. Gaining insight into business performance is close behind at 46%.

Can AI Help Remodelers Take On More Work Without Hiring More People?

Most contractors think so. In the JobTread AI Survey, almost 77% of respondents said they expect AI to help them take on more work without adding headcount.

That answer tracked closely with how much people are using AI. Power users who have connected it across their business overwhelmingly said yes. Lighter users made up most of the unsure and no responses.

How Are Construction Teams Adopting AI in Their Daily Work?

On most construction teams, AI has spread beyond a single user. In the JobTread AI Survey, more than half of respondents say it’s either becoming a normal part of how their team works or already built into how the company operates.
