Many people don’t know that there are highly effective keyboard commands hidden inside the websites you use the most
If you’ve ever felt like navigating software takes too much back and forth between the keyboard and the mouse, you are not alone. “The goal is efficiency and speed,” says Eric Fortenberry, CEO of JobTread. “So the less you can use the mouse, the better.”
One of the most effective ways to gain time is by mastering hidden keyboard shortcuts, many of which are built right into the websites and apps you use every day.
For many popular web apps, you can uncover these shortcuts by pressing Shift + /, which is the question mark key, on your keyboard. If the site supports this feature, a shortcut menu will appear showing available hotkey commands. In some systems, the commands apply to the entire web app, while in others they change based on the page you are viewing.
Here are some useful examples.
JobTread
In JobTread, pressing Shift + / opens a list of keyboard shortcuts that are active for the page you are on. To make it even more helpful, the commands you see from the home page will be different from those on the budget page, plans page, or other sections of the software. This means it’s easy to access more functions when you need them.
The system is designed so that the letter G stands for “go.” For example, GJ goes to Jobs, GC goes to Customers, and GV goes to Vendors. “We try to make it easy to remember by consistently using the first letter whenever possible,” Fortenberry explains.
Along those same lines, N stands for “new.” Want to enter a new customer? Type GC (Go to Customers) and NC (New Customer.) The same hot keys work for Jobs (NJ), Vendors (NV), Tasks (NT), and Daily Logs (ND).
You can see the available hot keys for any page by typing Shift + / from that location.
“Once you learn the keys, it makes JobTread even faster and more easy to use,” Fortenberry says. “I use them all the time.”
Below is the list of hot keys that pop up from the To-Dos page. You’ll notice that some of the options are different from those on the home page.
Facebook, Slack, and Google Drive
These three platforms share the same Control + / shortcut for opening the hotkeys menu. (If you’re a Slack user, there are a ton of helpful ones there.)
For YouTube, press Shift + / to open the shortcut menu.
