After selling his previous software company, Eric took over as CEO for a general contracting company that managed all types of jobs, from building homes to commercial remodel projects and everything in between. They called him in to help with a variety of problems they were facing including managing customers and vendors, inconsistent job bidding, confusing markup and margin, and not properly managing their receivables and payables. They were also fined thousands of dollars after an insurance audit revealed they were unknowingly sending sub-contractors out to job sites without active Certificates of Insurance.

"What I quickly found out is there were two reasons we didn’t hit our target profit margins," said Fortenberry. "We either misbid the job or we misran the job, and we needed to find a way to make it easy to get that done correctly every time. There’s also a ton of liability out there, and we needed to find a better way to protect ourselves!"

Eric did a comprehensive search to find software that would meet the company’s needs, but quickly discovered the existing products were either slow and clunky, not customizable, or didn’t have the functionality they needed. He also found that most products catered to just one aspect of the market and were not flexible enough to accommodate a variety of needs.

"I realized all the software out there was either outdated or wasn’t able to be tailored to our business so I decided to build something myself," states Fortenberry. "The new product not only helped the company get organized and stay on top of our financials, but it also helped us increase our gross profit by 43%! Once I saw the results, I knew we had built something great."

After successfully implementing the platform and getting the general contracting company back on the right track, Eric left to start JobTread where he has spent the last two years continuing to build out the platform to make it available to the broader market.
